Every time we get a big snow storm in Park City, Parley’s canyon on interstate 80 turns into a writhing beast of vehicular activity. It is quite a comical event.

Tractor trailers, in their vain gamble to avoid having to stop and put snow chains on their tires, will inevitably be wiggling all over three or four lanes of traffic like any number of earth worms after a heavy summer rain. These highway behemoths flail around in slow motion as their drive wheels fail to gain traction. So much for saving time…

And despite the overhead signs warning drivers to only navigate the canyon if they have four wheel drive or chains, many foolish people will make the attempt with front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, and poor tires. Which brings up a huge irony – what good will four wheel drive do for anyone without snow tires? Four wheel drive with out good tires is just four wheel slide. Is UDOT giving drivers unmerited assurance to climb the canyon in severe weather – is this some of sick joke?

It is hilarious what you see happening to all of these courageous travelers. Cars slid out facing every direction on the compass. Cars fifty feet off in the median trying to muscle their way way back on to the slippery pavement. Cars stopped in every lane. Cars weaving around struggling or abandoned cars. Big cars being towed by little cars. Little cars being towed by big cars. One little car going up. Two little cars going down. Go cars go.

The most comical thing I’ve seen is a nervous wife white knuckling and bent over the poor steering wheel of a front wheel drive car, wheels spinning, snow spitting, and the husband walking behind pushing the car. And this happening on the last two mile stretch of the very steep East bound section of the canyon. And they were somehow making headway. I couldn’t help but roll my window down as I passed them and holler, “That’s different!”.

The real irony of my most recent treacherous traverse is that I was driving a rented Cadillac Escalade from California for an unnamed company connected with the Sundance Film Festival. I was returning from an airport drop and had no idea whether this expensive, luxury Mormon mover had four wheel drive or the type of tires that could get the job done. The real irony is that I was one of those intrepid idiots trying to conquer this icy incline.

As it turns out the tires were quite decent and all four wheels were driving.

So this year instead of watching movies randomly as a family, we are going to schedule a family movie night (only) once-a-month. This will force us to be more selective and intentional; I like being intentional. We are not going to be legalistic about the idea, meaning, if we happen to be with friends and they want to watch a movie together, okay, that is fine. So…

January – Rio: an animated G-rated movie about a rare blue macaw that is rescued and then introduced to the only known female macaw – humor, adventure, and a musical.

This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to bring faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them the confidence of eternal life, which God – who cannot life – promised them before the world began. And now at the right time he has revealed this Good News and we announce it to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been trusted to do this work for him.

This letter is written to Titus, my true child in the faith that we share. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace.

I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. An elder must be well thought of for his good life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who are not wild or rebellious. An elder must live a blameless life because he is God’s minister. He must not be arrogant or a quick tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money. He must enjoy having guests in his home; and he must love all that is good. He must live wisely and be faith. He must live a devout and disciplined life. He must have a strong and steadfast belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with right teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.

For there are many who rebel against right teaching; they engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true to those who insist on circumcision for salvation. They must be silenced. By their wrong teaching they have already led whole families away from the truth. Such teachers only want your money. One of their own men, a prophet from Crete has said about them, ‘The people of Crete are all liars; they are cruel animals and lazy gluttons.” This is true. So correct them as sternly as necessary to make them strong in faith. They must not listen to Jewish myths or the commands of people who have turned their backs on the truth.

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving; their minds and consciences have been defiled. They claim they know God but they deny him by the way they live. They are despicable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

But as for you, promote the kind of living that reflects right teaching. Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have strong faith and be full of love and patience.

Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that is appropriate for someone serving the Lord. They must not go around speaking evil of others; and they must not be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to take care of their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they won’t bring shame on the Word of God.

In the same way, teach the younger men to live wisely in everything they do. And you yourself must be an example to them in doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the seriousness and integrity of your teaching. Let your teaching be so correct that it can’t be criticized. Then those who want to argue will be ashamed because they will have nothing bad to say about us.

Slaves must obey their masters and please them in every way. They must not talk back or steal, but they should show themselves to be completely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.

For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn away from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with self-control, right conduct, and devotion to God while we look forward to that wonderful event when our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, is revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing what is right. You must teach these things and encourage your people to do them, correcting them when necessary. You have the authority to do this so don’t let anyone ignore you or disregard what you say.

Remind your people to be submissive to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good. They must not speak evil of others; and they must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility towards everyone.

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled by others and became slaves to many wicked desires and evil pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others and they hated us.

But then God our Savior showed us his kindness and love. He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out his Spirit upon us because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did. He declared us not guilty because of his great kindness. And now we know we will inherit eternal life. These things I have told you are all true. I want you to insist on them so that everyone who trusts in God will be careful to do good deeds all the time. These things are good and beneficial for everyone.

Do not get involved with foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These kinds of things are useless and a waste of time. If anyone is causing divisions among you, give them a first and second warning. After that have nothing to do with that person. For people like that have turned their backs on the truth. They are sinning, and they condemn themselves.

I am planning on sending Artemas and Tychicus to you. As soon as one of them arrives, do your best to meet me in Nicopolis as quickly as you can, because I have decided to stay there for the winter. Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their trip. Make sure they have everything they need. For our people should not live unproductive lives. They must learn to do good by helping others with urgent needs.

Everyone here sends greetings. Please send my greetings to all the believers who love us.

May God’s grace be with you all.

13 Days ★ ★ ★ ★ – great historical fiction about the cuban missile crisis. language.

X Men: The Final Stand ★ ★ ★ ★ – great characters and action and special affects. language unnecessary. new age ideas

Old Yeller ★ ★ ★ – Disney classic. A little simple on the story and acting line. But a must watch as a dog lover.

The Curious Case for Benjamin Button ★ ★ ★ – interesting story line (unusual), good acting. adult themes. language.

The Twilight Zone ★ ★ ★ ★ ★, multiple episodes from the library. Working through Season 1 now.

Red ★ ★ ★ – violence, language. Retired Extremely Dangerous CIA agents are being hunted down and they must find out why to save themselves. The film uses fun transitions (postcards) between scenes and one the agents provides a lot of comic relief.

Persuasion ★ ★ ★ – based on Jane Austin’s book: a BBC video that is poor quality, acting is okay, some characters are irritating, but that can help the story; typical jane austin romance story line – the complexities of romance in the upper class. 1971 225 minutes, rated G by me.

The Greatest Game Ever Played ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ – Walt Disney Pictures: based on the true story of caddie Francis Ouimet who wins the 1913 US Open Championship against his boyhood idol. Rated PG, inspirational, a golf game presented like you have never seen – lots of CGI. Great cinematography and acting and story line.

Valkyrie ★ ★ ★ ★ – based on the true story of the last known attempt to assassinate Hitler from within the German military and citizenship. What would we risk for the honor of our country, personal dignity, and the welfare of our children?

Seven Pounds ★ ★ ★ ★ – I like how the story line was set up with flashbacks. I kept me constantly curious as to what had happened and what was going to happen. A story about how one man’s tragic mistake led to his crazy way to sacrificially make amends. Produced by the same guy who did The Pursuit of Happiness and again stars Will Smith.

An Unfinished Life ★ ★ ★ ★ – unnecessarily crass (language), but a novel story about reconciliation, forgiveness, loss, friendship, relationships, and standing up for your family.

Rocky ★ ★ ★ – I didn’t remember how much language there was in this original movie. Funny how we either overlooked or forgot how crass movies were when we were younger. Still a classic though. I like the idea of this movie, the underdog, nobody achieving so much, but I wish it were more realistic, namely, he could defend his head a whole lot more – nobody could take that much beating in the head. Rocky takes all his hits in the head which is unbelievable.

Rocky II ★ ★ ★ – less crass than Rocky I. If only Rocky took less hits to the head and was a little more of a boxer.

Rocky III ★ ★ ★ – more believable.

The Aviator ★ ★ ★ – a fascinating portrayal of Howard Hughes. His life makes for an interesting movie. I only wish Hollywood could portray immorality less thoroughly. (language, sensuality)

How to Train Your Dragon ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ – Funny, well animated, good story, pleasant moral.

Shrek, forever after ★ ★ ★ ★ – good moral of appreciating what you have.

I am Number Four ★ ★ ★ ★ – read the book and was pleased with how they stuck to the story with the movie. Presents some new agey ideas. Has themes of courage, friendship, and adolescent struggle.

True Grit ★ ★ ★ (original) ★ (2011) – the original with John Wayne is much better than the brand new one with Jeff Bridges. We watched both of them and the original is so much better.

Rango ★ ★ ★ – not as clever as I expected it to be and I was surprised by how much swearing was in this ‘kids’ movie.

The Great Escape ★ ★ ★ ★★ (1962) – an all-star cast depicts the true events of escape from a German war camp during WW II which ties up all kinds of resources from the Germans during the war. It has a comical side to a serious story.

Priest ★ ★ ★ ★ (2011) – some language and graphic violence. I was willing to tolerate the language for the sake of seeing a priest (or sincere Christian) be the good guy for a change. It is a wonderful allegory of the real war between the believer and darkness (devil, world, and flesh). The war is never over (until Christ returns) and when we ignore the war and put our guard down we fall prey to our enemies. It also makes a very delightful statement that faith is far more a personal responsibility than it is something that is dependent upon an institution (the church). [The real Church is simply people who share genuine faith in Christ -vs- a man-made hierarchy.] The ‘human-vampire’ made me think of all the ways we blend ‘church’ with the world in often a vane attempt to ‘save the world’; mixing faith and the world only advances the darkness. Pretty cool stuff.

Captain America ★ ★ ★ ★ (2011) – I am getting more and more weary of Hollywood’s insistance upon using profanity to make a story more edgy. Why can’t we have a hero story without the crassness? This story has such deep morality of the ‘weak’ being strong and real courage.

Green Lantern ★ ★ (2011) – I love sci-fi but disgusted with the prevalence of profanity and sexual innuendo. Again, can’t we leave off the crassness? Though I enjoy sci-fi, action, and hero stories – this one where a selfish pig just decides to be a good guy one day is a large pill to swallow – why would such a jerk be ‘chosen’ to be a hero, though he does good once he is chosen? Maybe this is a ‘grace’ story (he gets what he doesn’t deserve)? There is also a strong reference to evolution which is so pathetic – give up on this lie already! There is no proof people!!! Where are the thousands, if not millions, of transition fossils that we should have dug up by now? Even your greatest supporters have given up on the idea that cells could have developed on our planet.

It’s a Wonderful Life ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ [colorized] – one of the best movies ever made. If you haven’t seen it, what is keeping you? Have you seen in in color yet?

Kungfu Panda 2 ★ ★ ★ ★ – clean, family-friendly. Themes of forgiveness and finding oneself.

The Bird Man of Alcatraz ★ ★ ★ ★ ★- very interesting story of how showing dignity to prisoners is invaluable. Great acting and based on a true story.

Park City isn’t our home; only a small number can claim this casual, comely community as home. We are a town of transplants and tourists. Christmas is coming and our homes are far, far a way.
Home is often where we were raised and where our dear kindred dwell. Home is where we have a sense of belonging, ‘these are the people that love me.’
The few times my wife and I have spent a holiday away from home are unpleasant memories.
One year we decided to step out of the home on Christmas and spend some time together between being at my family home and her family home. We had hoped we could go to a restaurant on Christmas day and enjoy a pleasant meal alone. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find an open restaurant and we ended up buying a cheap, flavorless sandwich at a gas station and sitting in our car looking at Christmas lights outside a stranger’s home. There were tears. We were not at home.
One holiday, we decided to stay home and develop our own tradition as a young family. Our home felt empty and cold. Where was the laughter, jabbing, frantic kitchen activity, sweet smells, picture taking, complaining, interpersonal conflict, conversations, and the lines for the bathroom? Our weak attempt at developing own tradition and create a cushion between our home and the extended family wasn’t turning out like we thought. We missed belonging to an imperfect family. We missed being at home.
On the other hand, we can’t afford to fly back to Minnesota where most of our extended family homes are. We have driven back a couple of times, but that is a brutal business – traversing Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota in late December makes as much sense as skiing naked in January. High winds, whiteouts, ice, below zero wind chills, and barren wastelands. One trip we ran out of gas due to a faulty fuel gauge, cold weather, high winds, and using a poor performing ethanol-gas mixture that they sell in the Mid-west. And we were far from home.
So this year, we are fearfully staying put in our home. We don’t want this Holy Day to be a downer for us and, especially, our two kids who are very fond of their cousins. So we are strategizing and making plans that will insure a meaningful Christmas.
We haven’t exchanged gifts as a family, we have been boycotting the frenzy of materialism for years, but this year we will break that tradition in an attempt to celebrate our Holy Day at home.
We are also getting together with close friends to create that sought after feeling of belonging – to be in someone’s home with people who care about us, to experience that home that we so need and long for.
“I’ll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams”.

by Ron Paul

The Palestinian Authority’s recent announcement that it would seek UN recognition as an independent state dominated the news and the political debate in the United States last week, though in truth it should mean very little to us. Only a political class harboring the illusion it can run the world obsesses over the aspirations of a tiny population on a tiny piece of land thousands of miles away. Remember, the UN initiated this persistent conflict with its 1947 Partition Plan.

Unfortunately the debate is dominated by those who either support the Israeli side in the conflict, or those who support the Palestinian desire for statehood. We rarely seem to hear the view of those who support the US side and US interests. I am on that side. I believe that we can no longer police the world. We can no longer bribe the Israelis and Palestinians to continue an endless “peace process” that goes nowhere. It is not in our interest to hector the Palestinians or the Israelis, or to “export” democracy to the region but reject it when people vote the “wrong” way.

I have reservations about the Palestinian drive for UN recognition. Personally I wish the United States would de-recognize the United Nations. As most readers already know, in every Congress I introduce legislation to end our membership in that organization. The UN is a threat to our sovereignty– and as we are the main source of its income, it is a threat to our economic well-being. Increasingly over the past several years, we see the United Nations providing political and legal cover for the military aspirations of interventionists rather than serving as an international forum to preserve peace. Neoconservatives in the US have grown to love the United Nations as they co-opt the organization under the guise of endless “reform.” Under the sovereignty-destroying doctrine of “Responsibility to Protect,” adopted at the 2005 World Summit, the UN takes it upon itself to intervene in internal conflicts of its member states whenever it believes that human rights are being violated. Thus under “Responsibility to Protect,” the UN provides the green light for a kind of global no-knock raid on any sovereign country.

If asked, I would personally counsel the Palestinians to avoid the United Nations. UN membership and participation is no guarantee that sovereignty will be respected. We see what happens to UN members such as Iraq and Libya when those countries’ leaders fall out of favor with US administrations: under US and allied pressure a fig leaf resolution is adopted in the UN to facilitate devastating military intervention. When the UN gave NATO the green light to bomb Libya there was no genocide taking place. It was a purely preventative war. The result? Thousands dead, a destroyed country, and extremely dubious new leaders.

While I do not see UN membership as a particularly productive move for the Palestinian leadership, I do not believe the US should use its position in the UN Security Council to block their membership. I believe in self-determination of peoples and I recognize that peoples may wish to pursue statehood by different means. As we saw after the Cold War, numerous new states were born out of the ruins of the USSR as the various old Soviet Republics decided that smaller states were preferable to an enormous and oppressive multi-national conglomerate.

The real, pro-US solution to the problems in the Middle East is for us to end all foreign aid, stop arming foreign countries, encourage peaceful diplomatic resolutions to conflicts, and disengage militarily. In others words, follow Jefferson’s admonition: “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.”

The Lost Hero – Rick Riordan

The Immortals – Paul Stewart and Chris Riddel

A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens

This is Your Brain on Music -

The Way of Kings – Brandon Sanderson: the guy who replaced Robert Jordan, his story is just as good and does not include the sexual innuendos

Immanuel’s Viens – Ted Dekker: a ‘christian’ vampire story (children of the angels)

Extraordinary, Ordinary People – Condoleezza Rice: from rags to riches, from burmingham to washington d.c., excellent

Boy’s Life – Robert McCammon: all the elements of a great story, a little crass at times, captures boyhood with excellence

Restoring the Republic – Devin Nunes

Incarceron – Catherine Fisher

Sapphique – Catherine Fisher

For the Time Being – Annie Dillard

The Old Curiosity Shop – Charles Dickens: very typical Dickens, poor characters trying to overcome adversity, bad characters who are rich and poor who attempt to take advantage, and a couple wealthy good-hearted people along the way

The Maze Runner

The Supernaturals

The Fellowship of the Ring

In the Blink of an Eye – Michael Waltrip

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption – Laura Hillenbrand: a wonderful, true story that was hard to put down. Wild survival stories, a wild kid, a wild runner, and a wild faith journey.

Born To Run: A hidden tribe, superathletes, and the greatest race the world has never seen - Christopher McDougall: an intriguing look at the idea of running and a very interesting story of great modern runners. Makes me want to want to run.

Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived – Rob Bell. Intriguing. This book is for anyone who grew up with hell fire and brimstone. His message, which reminds us of just how good the good news is and just how loving God is, resonated with me. Judgment Day will remain a mystery to me but we definitely need a reminder that God is just and loving.

Confessions of a Band Geek Mom – Stacy Dymalski.

The Priest’s Graveyard – Ted Dekker. Interesting fiction that gets at the real meaning of love and judgment.

The Seven Wonders that will change your life – Glen Beck & Keith Ablow.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – one third story and two thirds philosophy. I enjoyed the author’s descriptions of motorcycles, travels, and scenery. The philosophy gets a little heavy at times, but he introduces the reader to the conflicts between classic and romantic thought quite well.

007, Carte Blanche – fiction

Seal Team Six – one seal’s journey

The Heart and the Fist – excellent perspective of a humanitarian turned Navy Seal.

The Secret History of the CIA – I had to stop this one because it was so depressing.

The Original Arguement, Glen Beck – a paraphrased version of the Federalist Papers written by John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and… – didn’t finish, too heady, but I enjoyed exposing myself to some of the ideas.

One Bullet Away, The Making of a Marine Officer – story of entering the Marines and serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

RED: Sammy Hagar’s uncensored biography – I had to stop reading this book because Sammy’s life was/is so dysfunctional it is sad. I was curious to read the life of a ‘rock star’ and shouldn’t be surprised by the ‘uncensored’ element.

Anything You Want – a very quick read (1 or 2 hours), the story of the success of the founder of CDbaby.com, lots of good business axioms and stories, to the point.

Lost in Shangra-La – the true story of a plane full of Military support personel crashing in the high jungles of New Guinea during WWII and their struggle for survival and rescue.

propaganda: information, esp. of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.

here is three big ones:

the civil war was about slavery (if so, why did the North sell their slaves to the South beforehand and then fail to give equal rights until decades later?)

milk is a good source of calcium (milk tastes great, I enjoy it, but it is meant for baby cows – greens have more digestible calcium than milk)

children should receive immunization shots (are kids at more risk from getting a small dose of the virus from an immunization?)

we have a two party political system (since when? did you know after Ross Perot’s success the Republicrats stopped allowing independents to participate in the presidential debates?)

world war II was started by the Nazis’ (instead of a poor handling of the Germans after WW I)

the poor economy is only the fault of our government (what about the undeterred Federal Reserve?)

we need a federal department of education (really? since when has anyone in washington helped my local schools better?)

and yes, global warming (how come we don’t hear anything about the studies of trees in siberia proving the earth warming being a fraud?) i do believe micro-climate change and favor the idea of weather cycles.
